This novel, written pseudonymously, takes place in Kabul soon after the Russian invasion. A young man finds himself participating enthusiastically in the stoning death of a woman accused of prostitution, then confesses the incident to his horrified wife, a lawyer. Meanwhile, another couple--an army veteran and his critically ill wife--find the abuses of their homeland reflected in their relationship.
