Many caufes are to be afiigned. The fanaticifm, which prevailed about the middle of the laft century, had a fatal influence over the theatre for fome time. The intemperance of religious zeal carried deftruc tion along with it wherever the works of tafle were to bemet with and its dominion continued fo long, that few of the dramatic poets, who flourifhed when the civil wars broke out, re mained at the Refloration.
